Dry skin can be irritating and uncomfortable. It’s dull and unpleasant in appearance, and is more prone to skin conditions like eczema. We should always strive to alleviate dry skin by all means possible to achieve healthy and beautiful skin. Dry skin can occur from the harsh and dry winter air. It can also appear from using harsh products such as soaps and creams.

Try these 10 tricks to banish dry skin:

1. Invest in a humidifier
Use a humidifier to alleviate dry skin and its complications. With insufficient moisture in the air around the house, there is a high tendency of skin becoming dry. Using a humidifier helps to condition the moisture protecting your skin. The humidifier distributes moisture through the air, so you can sleep comfortably without worries of waking up with dry skin.

2. Moisturize
Make it a routine to always moisturize during the winter. Shop for a thick moisturizer compared to those you would use during the warmer months. Moisturizer helps to lock in moisture, protecting your skin from becoming dry. Apply moisturizer after you wash your face in the morning and at night before your retire for bed. You can reinforce your moisturizer with a hydrating serum with vitamin C in it for a radiant complexion while still protecting it from dryness.

3. Limit the number/length of baths/showers
The more baths you take, the drier your skin can get from the water. If you bathe twice a day, aim for once a day instead to avoid drying out your skin. When taking a shower, make it short. The longer you stay in the shower, the higher the risk is of getting dry skin. Your shower water should not be hot, as this can strip off the essential oils that act as a protective layer keeping the skin from drying. Make sure you use lukewarm water and wash using gloves to protect your hands from drying.

4. Avoid wool fabrics
Wool fabrics in clothing, or even bedding, create a tendency of itchiness on the skin. This might make you scratch, leading to dryness. In case of itchy skin, avoid scratching and moisturize.

5. Drink plenty of water
Drinking plenty of water hydrates you from the inside and alienates skin dryness. Water makes your skin silky smooth and cleans the body of all free radicals that could result in skin dryness.

6. Eat well
Make a lifestyle change by eating a nutritious diet. Do not over-depend on products applied on the outside without working from the inside. Nutritious foods contain essential extracts that will protect the skin from drying.

7. Do not forget the lips
With the harsh effect of the air during winter, lips are vulnerable to dryness. They can get chapped and flaky if you neglect them. Make an effort to exfoliate your lips to remove the dead skin every morning using your toothbrush or a soft towel. You can also make an exfoliant out of honey and sugar both in equal proportions. Immediately after exfoliation, wipe with a clean wet towel and moisturize for soft and lively lips.

8. Use little soap
Use very little soap. Soaps can be harsh and have heightened drying effects during winter. Choose a gentle skin cleanser over the soap. The cleanser will be friendlier with your skin’s essential oils.

9. Exfoliate
Excessive dead skin cells, if left without removal, can lead to dry skin. Use gentle exfoliants on your skin. This will help the skin to get renewed and let in more moisture, making it have a natural, gorgeous glow. Moisturize immediately after exfoliating. By exfoliating, you make your moisturizing creams work better to avoid dry skin.

10. Use sunscreen
You don’t just get sunburns in the sun, but can still get them after being out in the snow. This is possible as some rays penetrate during the winter. Remember to wear safe sunscreen before you go outdoors. If you love winter outdoor activities like skiing and snowboarding, sunscreen is the only way to prevent sunburns. The burns lead to development of dry and flaky skin. The drying of the skin can also be aggravated by the harsh winter winds.
